GUIDE 1: Considerations for Stadium Lighting
Before selecting a fixture, it’s important to match the lighting system to your field size, mounting height, and usage needs.
1. Brightness (Lumens)
Stadium lights are chosen by lumens, not watts. The larger the field and higher the mounting height, the more lumens you’ll need.
-
Small practice fields: ~30,000–60,000 lumens per fixture
-
Regulation fields: 80,000–150,000+ lumens per fixture
-
High mast or broadcast lighting: 200,000+ lumens per fixture
Higher lumen output ensures even coverage, eliminates dark zones, and meets safety standards for athletes and spectators.
2. Mounting Height & Pole Spacing
The height of your light poles determines how wide and uniform the light spreads.
Taller poles require higher lumen output and tighter beam angles to keep light on the field instead of spilling into surrounding areas.
Typical stadium mounting heights range from 40 to 120 feet, depending on the venue size.
3. Beam Angle & Light Distribution
Beam angle controls how focused or wide the light is:
-
Narrow beams (15°–30°): Long throw distance for high mast installations
-
Medium beams (40°–60°): General field lighting
-
Wide beams (90°+): Broad area coverage for lower mounting heights
Choosing the right optic pattern prevents glare, reduces light pollution, and keeps illumination where it’s needed.
GUIDE 2: The Best Color Temperature For Stadium Lights
Most stadium LED lighting uses 5000K daylight white, which provides:
-
Maximum visibility
-
Accurate color rendering for players and cameras
-
Better contrast for ball tracking
Some training or recreational fields may use 4000K for a slightly softer tone, but 5000K is standard for professional and school athletic fields.
GUIDE 3: Knowing How Many Lights To Install For Your Sports Facility
The number of fixtures depends on:
-
Field size
-
Pole height
-
Desired brightness level
-
Sport type and competition requirements
A small baseball or practice field may only need 6–8 fixtures, while a full football stadium may require 20+ high-output lights for uniform coverage.
GUIDE 4: Replacing Traditional Metal Halide Fixtures With Superior Lighting's LED Stadium Lights
Yes - LED stadium lights are true direct replacements for metal halide and HID systems, using similar mounting styles and voltage options so they can retrofit onto existing poles and crossarms without redesigning the layout. Unlike HID fixtures that waste energy as heat and lose brightness over time, LED stadium lights allow facilities to cut energy costs by up to 70% while delivering brighter, more consistent illumination. LEDs also last far longer - typically 50,000+ hours compared to 10,000–15,000 for metal halide - which reduces relamping, lift rentals, and maintenance. In addition, LED stadium lights provide instant on/off performance, eliminating warm-up delays and restart downtime after power interruptions.
GUIDE 5: Reducing Glare With High Output Stadium Light Fixtures
Modern stadium LEDs use precision optics and shielding to direct light downward, reducing glare for players, spectators, and nearby properties. The majoity of our fixtures come with a standard 4H x 4V NEMA beam angle, which means between 46 to 70 degrees in a uniform, horizontal and vertical spread of light. This provides a concentrated and symmetrical pattern that optimizes output of this type of fixture when it is mounted very high.
They also come with a standard partial glare shield visor on the top of the unit to help reduce light spreading to areas where it is not needed, and helps reduce light pollution. For further reduction, we can special order a glare control shield that attaches to the lens, but this must be ordered on the phone with our sales team and is only available for the large size.
